The patternWhat travellers report, again and again
The same handful of themes run through the feedback on these trips, and they are worth knowing before you choose one. They hold across both kinds of day here — the short guided walks from the lake and the long private cars out of Tokyo.
- The guide makes the day. Named guides come up far more often than the scenery does, and the walks with the smallest groups draw the warmest words.
- The cold is underestimated. Travellers who wrote about the caves almost all mention wishing they had worn more. Pack a fleece whatever the forecast says above ground.
- It is real footing, not a walkway. The caving walks involve a descent, low headroom and ice underfoot, and people say so plainly. If that is not your day, the signed surface trail asks none of it.
- The mountain often does not appear. Cloud sits on the cone for much of the year, and the reviews that stayed warm about a clouded day are the ones where the route had enough else in it.
- Value is judged on what is included. The days with admission, gear or a cooked lunch inside the fare are rated more generously than the cheaper ones that leave those at the door.

A good morning out with a guide who knew the plants and the animals in real detail. The climb down into the cave is a little exposed but not difficult, and he watched everyone's footing. The ice formations are the payoff.

Be prepared for real cave hiking rather than a walkway. Aokigahara Forest and the tube underneath it are a natural, undisturbed, rugged environment. The guide was terrific, but this is not a stroll.

Better than expected. Helmets with head lamps were handed out and were genuinely necessary climbing down over the ice. A lot of information about the forest and the cave came with it.

Private costs more but it is worth it here. You are not guaranteed to see the mountain, so having other stops built into the day matters more than people expect. The barbecue was excellent as well.
